Managing Your Child’s Fever at Home

  • A Healthy Sign: A fever is usually a normal sign that your child's immune system is working hard to fight an infection. The temperature itself is rarely the problem. It shows the body is doing its job.
  • Focus on Comfort: Do not worry about "fixing" the number on the thermometer. Your main goal is to keep your child comfortable and hydrated.
  • Hydration is Key: Offer plenty of fluids (water or milk). It is normal for them to eat less, but they must keep drinking. Watch for signs of dehydration like dry mouth, sunken eyes, or dry nappies.
  • Clothing: Dress your child in light clothing and use light bedding.
  • Medication: Only use children's paracetamol or ibuprofen if your child is distressed or in pain. If they are playing happily despite the fever, they do not need medicine.
