Non-NHS Fees and Private Referrals
Key Information
- NHS vs. Non-NHS: Not all services provided by GPs are covered by the NHS. Tasks that fall outside our NHS contract require dedicated time to complete and so incur a fee.
- Examples of Chargeable Work:
- Insurance claim forms
- Holiday cancellation letters.
- Fitness to travel certificates.
- Medical examinations for employment or driving (eg HGV).
- Payment Policy: Payment is required before our team completes the form or report.
- Timeline: Once payment is received, please allow 4 weeks for the completion of forms or reports.
Private Referrals
If you wish to see a specialist privately, we can provide a referral letter following a consultation.
- Cost: There is no charge for the initial referral letter itself, as this is considered part of our NHS work. However, if further information or reports are required after your private consultation, a fee may apply.
- Your Responsibility: You must provide us with the name of the specific consultant you wish to see. Our clinicians usually cannot recommend specific private specialists. Please check with your insurer or the private hospital.
- Collection: Please allow 2 weeks for the letter to be prepared. You must collect the letter yourself from reception to ensure safe delivery. We cannot post these letters.
How to Request Non-NHS Work
To request a form, letter, or medical examination, please hand your documents to reception or contact us via our online service. Our team will advise you if a fee applies and how to pay.
Further Information
To understand more about why GPs charge fees for non-NHS work, you can read the guidance provided by the British Medical Association (BMA).
