Proxy Access: Managing Health for Others

Key Information

  • The NHS App allows you to act as a "Trusted Digital Helper" (Proxy) for a family member, such as a child, partner, or elderly parent.
  • What You Can Do: Once set up, you can securely access their services through your own App. This allows you to order repeat prescriptions, view test results, and manage appointments on their behalf.
  • Step 1: Authorisation: You cannot simply add a person yourself. You must be formally authorised by the surgery. This involves a consent and identity check process to protect everyone's privacy.
  • Step 2: Switching Profiles: Once our team has linked the accounts, you can easily switch between your profile and the profile of the person you care for within the NHS App.

Important Note for Parents

  • Children Under 11: Parents can usually be given proxy access for children under 11 relatively easily.
  • Children 11-16: As children get older, the rules change to respect their growing privacy. Access may be restricted or require the child's explicit consent.
  • Adults: To access records for another adult (eg a partner or parent), that person must usually be present to give consent, or have a legal power of attorney in place.
