- Why it Matters: We all enjoy a warm, sunny day, but UV rays can cause significant damage. Following three simple steps can effectively reduce your risk of skin cancer.
Step 1: Seek Shade
- In the UK, the sun is strongest from March to October.
- The most dangerous hours are between 11am and 3pm. Spending time in the shade during these peak times offers the best protection.
Step 2: Cover Up
- Clothing acts as a reliable physical barrier against UV rays.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, neck, and ears.
- Use UV-protective sunglasses to shield your eyes.
Step 3: Sunscreen (The Shield)
- The Bottle Check: Ensure your sunscreen has an SPF of at least 30 (to block UVB rays) and a UVA star rating of 4 or 5 stars.
- Application: Apply generously about 30 minutes before going outside.
- Reapplication: Reapply at least every two hours, and always after swimming or sweating. Do not forget areas such as the tops of your feet, neck, and ears.
Monitoring Your Skin
No protection is perfect, so it is important to know your own skin. Check it every few months.
If you notice a mole that is changing, or a new mark that does not heal within four weeks, it is always best to be safe and get it checked.
