Managing Type 2 Diabetes: You Are in the Driver's Seat
Key Information
- The First Steps: Being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes is life-changing, but you are in control. For most people, the most powerful way to manage it at first is through lifestyle changes rather than medication.
- The Goal: These changes aim to lower the amount of sugar in your blood. By doing this, you reduce the risk of long-term health problems and, in some cases, may even put the condition into remission.
The Three Pillars of Management
We will support you in three key areas to help you take control of your health.
- Diet: Making Healthier Choices
This does not mean you can never have your favourite foods again. It is about making healthier choices more often.
Eat more fruits, vegetables, and wholegrain options.
Reduce your intake of sugar and saturated fats. - Physical Activity: Moving More
The goal for most adults is at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week. This does not need to be gym-based exercise. It includes anything that gets your heart beating a little faster, such as:
- A brisk walk.
- Cycling.
- Vigorous gardening. - Weight Management
If you are overweight, losing even a small amount can make a significant difference. Evidence shows that losing just 5% of your body weight can significantly improve your blood sugar levels.
